Boone County Government Launches New Official Website

Boone, IA. -- Boone County leaders and staff recently “cut the ribbon” on a new official Boone County Government Website intended to provide more comprehensive and timely information to County residents, workplaces and visitors. The website, will be launched at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 24th.
“We are very excited to launch this new website,” stated Bill Lusher, Chair of the Boone County Board of Supervisors. He added, “Being able to communicate with the public and provide them with useful information is an important part of our mission. The new website is a significant improvement in helping us to fulfill that mission and I encourage people to go online and view the site.”
The new website includes information on services provided by county departments, calendars of events, meeting schedules, area attractions and more. The format of the site is user-friendly and promotes Boone County, its residents and workplaces, and the “jewels” that can be enjoyed while visiting.
This new website, with a goal to be more user friendly and containing more information than the current site, has been in development for some time. Starting three years ago, county staff assessed the concerns apparent with the site in use at that time and attempted to build the website using in-house resources. It was a very slow process that consumed a lot of time and resources. Approximately 18 months ago the website that was in the process of being developed was scrapped since it failed to address most of the concerns associated with the original site.
With new direction from the Board of Supervisors, about 12 months ago the website committee began the development process for the second time. The Board provided the committee with a vision of creating a site that provided an easy way to communicate with the public and would also serve as a general resource about the County for the public. Learning a lot of lessons from its first attempt, the website committee decided to look in to the possibility of hiring a company to develop a site for the county.
Several product demonstrations were made to the Information Technology Department by website vendors. After several months of subsequent research, the IT department and website committee made a recommendation to the Board of Supervisors to work with Vision Internet, a company with an extensive portfolio of developing government websites including Ankeny, West Des Moines and Dallas County.
The last year has included staff from all levels of county government being involved in the development of this new website. The former site had 25 distinct pages of content. The new website hosts 261 distinct pages with links to another 200 pages for a total of 461 pages of useful and timely information that can be accessed by internet users on a 24 hour basis throughout the year.
The website is easy to navigate and it is also easy for departmental staff to manage and keep maintained. Updating information can be done by staff in each department. The website is also designed to be ADA compliant which is a feature the former site was not able to address.
