GIS is a data driven mapping system. GIS is using everything from census data to recorded surveys and aerial photos to create a graphical representation of the county. These representations give the County a better idea of conditions and increase speed and integrity of the decisions.

The Boone County GIS is a valuable tool used throughout all of the county offices for varying tasks including: planning, land assessment, crime tracking, development hot spots, utilities, infrastructure, road assessment, and many other applications.
The Boone County Assessor and Auditor started development on the GIS in 1999 it was installed on three computers. Since that time it has expanded to be used by two-thirds of County departments.

The GIS users are working on several exciting projects in the County. Boone County is working with a lot of other agencies in Boone County, the Central Iowa region, and State to share technical knowledge, processes and development best practices.
The GIS is available to the general public at no cost via our GIS website.
The GIS raw data is available for the public from the GIS Coordinator. Data is available in shapefile format it can be delivered on CD/DVD or via ftp. To Request the data contact the Boone County GIS Coordinator for availability and pricing.
